Abstract
Chinese literary and art history abounds in stories and depictions of an encounter between the Neo-Confucian Li Ao (ca;772-ca.841) and the Chan monk Yaoshan (750-834). This article deals with the account of how Li Ao traveled to meet Yaoshan, and with the story of how their encounter subsequently traveled through time and space, i.e., went beyond the actual tavel of Li Ao. Light is also shed on the travel experiences of the personalities connected with this encounter and the travel history of the stories in which these experiences and encounters are narrated. The article also deals with the way human imagination travels beyond the words and depictions of stories themselves. The latter is illustrated by the case of Li Ao's 'travelling to the inner self'.
