- Abstract
- Notwithstanding the fact that self-regulated learning (SRL) is an important educational goal and the call for promoting SRL early in students’ school careers, only a few studies have been conducted on primary school children’s SRL. This empirical shortage is related to the current need for valid measures of SRL for this age group. In order to gain more insight in late primary school children’s SRL, the present study focused on the development and validation of a comprehensive self-report questionnaire. Based on the conceptual framework of Pintrich (2004), the Children’s Perceived use of Self-Regulated Learning Inventory (CP-SRLI) consisting of nine subcomponents, was developed. A multistep process was used to develop the questionnaire, including reviews by a teacher and expert panel, cognitive interviews, and a large-scale item try out. The original 109-item questionnaire was then presented to 504 fifth and 463 sixth graders. Subsequent to exploratory factor analyses on each subcomponent, the factor structure of each subcomponent was confirmed by confirmatory factor analyses, leading to a questionnaire of 75 items. The results indicate that the CP-SRLI is an appropriate instrument for assessing the different components of SRL in primary school children in the later grades. Further, the factor structure of the different subcomponents is found to be invariant across boys and girls. This research makes a significant contribution to the future of the field of SRL among late primary school children.
