Abstract
This article illustrates how funeral practices acted as auditive and visual post mortem claims of social status in village communities. To this end the 16th-century burial practices of Dudzele, a village situated in the Flemish polder area, were analyzed. Based on a combination of both qualitative source material and a quantitative analysis, it is demonstrated that on the micro-level a strong correlation existed between the wealth of most deceased persons and how they were buried. On the macro-level it is shown that the funeral practices as a whole were strongly influenced by the changing socio-economic context throughout the 16th century.
Keywords
burial practices, 16th century, village community, social inequality
