Absenteïsme op de werkvloer: een onderzoek naar de invloed van 'iso-strain' en gezondheid bij Vlaamse werknemers

Abstract
Purpose: The goal of this paper is to examine to what extent ‘iso-strain’ can explain different levels of absenteeism among the Flemish working population, taking into account the mediating effect of subjective health. Methods: A representative sample of 11 099 employees was analyzed, making use of ordinal logistic regressions. Results: All of the hypotheses were confirmed. ‘Iso-strain’ was negatively associated with health outcomes, poorer health was related to higher levels of absenteeism and ‘iso-strain’ was also associated with higher levels of absenteeism. Health only partially mediates the relation between ‘iso-strain’ and absenteeism. The hypotheses remained valid when taking into account different measures of absenteeism (frequency and duration) and different measures of health (general, emotional wellbeing and musculoskeletal health). Conclusion: ‘Iso-strain’ is an important predictor of absenteeism, even when taking into account the mediating effect of health. To reduce absenteeism, policy should also be aware of the job and employment conditions people face and how this influences absenteeism.
