abstract
The spatial analysis of cemeteries revisited. The example of the Late Iron Age and Early Gallo-Roman cemetery of Lamadelaine (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg) Cemeteries are rarely characterised by arbitrary implantations and distributions of the funerary features. The burials themselves are, in general, distinguished by instant-formation and often undamaged artefacts, deposited intentionally. As a consequence, this type of archaeological site is most suitable for quantitative and spatial analyses allowing for more information on the spatial organisation, the chronology and the social-economic aspects of the cemetery. This paper evaluates the principal methods of intra-site spatial analysis adapted to cemeteries on the basis of the data of the protohistoric and Gallo-Roman cemetery of Lamadelaine and proposes a new interpretation on the spatial organisation of this cemetery of the oppidum of the Titelberg.
