Influence of vacuum mixing on the microstructure of RPC

abstract
In this study the influence of vacuum mixing on the microstructure of reactive powder concrete (RPC) is examined. Commonly used reactive powder concretes contain a rather high air content compared with a self-compacting concrete. A possible reason is the high viscosity of such mixtures. As a consequence air bubbles are not capable to escape out of the mass under its own weight. Therefore it is interesting to check whether a reduced air pressure in the mixing pan can lower this air content. The technique is relevant, because concrete types with a high air content are overall susceptible to aggression of the environment. It is well known that a higher permeability will lead to a lower resistance against sulfate and chloride penetration and in the case of reinforced concrete will lead to corrosion of the rebar. In a time were sustainable constructions are preferable, a reactive powder concrete can be very helpful, due to its high performance. In order to improve this performance even more, the possibilities of vacuum mixing should be tested. In this study the influence of this technique on the microstructure of RPC is investigated by the means of an air void analyzer, a mercury intrusion porosimeter and fluorescence microscopy.
