Experimental investigation of structural glass in post-breakage stage

As glass is being established more and more as a real structural material in building industry, a growing awareness exists for its post-breakage performance. More specifically, failure modes and residual load-bearing capacity of laminated glass are of particular interest as they are essential to design a fully safe glass structure. In this context, several examples and their corresponding experimental assessments are discussed. First, a real failure case of laminated glass panels is presented with a focus on the experimental investigation, including residual glass stress measurements by means of scattered light polariscope. Subsequently, state of the art scientific research on the post-breakage behavior of laminated glass samples with a stiff interlayer are presented. In detail, full-scale creep and relaxation experiments on laminated glass beams at lowered or elavated temperature levels are shown, as the overall behavior of a laminated glass component is highly influenced by the serviceability temperature. Finally, examples are given of state of the art research by means of optical techniques on local debonding and necking of the interlayer in laminated glass during post-breakage continued loading of laminated glass. Finally, the contribution concludes with a summary of current challenges with regard to experimental research in structural glass for building industry.
