Stopping the show: film photography in Mack Sennett slapstick comedies (1917-1933)

Hilde D'haeyere UGent (2012)
abstract
Stopping the Show sheds light on the practice of inserting show-stopping spectacle in slapstick comedy films produced by Mack Sennett after the frantic Keystone shorts that made him the legendary King of Comedy. The show-stoppers prove to be essential components of slapstick movies of the 1920s and early 1930s. An analysis of their formal, aesthetic, and technical features unravels the tactics of updating, upgrading, and uplifting slapstick comedy, responding to evolutions in the larger world of mass-entertainment. Referring to special effects techniques, lighting, fashion, documentary filmmaking, cheesecake photography, and natural color processes, Hilde D’haeyere studies the attraction of girls, color, and news in comedy.
