NO BUG: novel release system and bio based unitilities for mosquito repellent textiles and garments

abstract
NO BUG addresses the protection of professional travellers from day and night feeding mosquitoes in order to prevent infection by malaria and dengue. Current repellent textiles are facing 2 limitations, namely: concerns have risen regarding potential harm of repellents to the wearer and the environment, and the lifetime of products is too short (effective release decreases in time and due to washing). NO BUG wants to solve these problems by:· Searching for natural repellents which do not have negative health effects · Developing novel release systems thus prolonging the life time of the products After 30 months the main objectives have been achieved: new repellents have been identified and a proof of concept of novel release systems has been given. Mathematical models support the design of novel release systems. Advanced methods are being used for studying the response of moquitoes on various test samples with the new repellents and/or release systems. They provide quantitative data. Field tests are carried out as well on a selection of samples. The last phase of the project will target production of bed nets and clothes with the NO BUG concepts. In addition exploitation is emphasized.
