Influence of fill material and type of geosynthetic reinforcement in a piled embankment, model experiments

abstract
A test series of model experiments on piled embankment was performed at Deltares. Three of the tests were carried out to analyse two features : (1) the difference between a sand fill and a fill of granular fill with large grains and (2) the difference between the application of a geotextile or a geogrid reinforcement. It was found that a higher friction angle of the fill gives more arching during consolidation of the subsoil. According to the EBGEO/CUR calculation methods, consolidation would lead to no increase in arching at all. Furthermore, the difference in performance when appying a geotextile or a geogrid with the same mechanical chareacteristics is negligible. The difference between appying a sand or granular fill is much larger.
