An experimental study of natural convection in open-cell aluminum foam

Abstract
Natural convection in air-saturated aluminum foam has been measured. A carefully designed experimental setup is built for this task. The calibration is done by comparing the results of a flat plate with literature data, revealing excellent agreement. The investigated foams have a pore density of 10 and 20 PPI. The bonding of the foam is performed via brazing, or by applying a single epoxy which is enriched with highly conductive alumina particles. The Rayleigh number is varied between 2500 and 6000, with the ratio of the surface area to the perimeter of the substrate as characteristic length. The foam height is varied between 12 and 25.4 mm A major difference between both the bonding methods is observed. The brazed samples showed a better heat transfer in all cases. Furthermore, when increasing the foam height, a clear augmentation of the heat transfer is observed. Based on these results, a correlation is presented.
