The artful mind: the evolutionary psychology of artistic behaviour

abstract
Evolutionary psychology is among the various evolutionary and cognitive perspectives that have been used to account for the evolutionary origins of art. Its goal is to explain current human psychology by means of the evolutionary history of the species, determining how extant cognitive machinery evolved as adaptations or byproducts to past environmental surroundings. As for art, this means tracking down its cognitive foundations, as well as establishing their evolutionary rationale and any function that artistic behaviour as a whole might have. However, current evolutionary psychological research on art is impeded by numerous methdological issues and gaps, such as a lack of empirical support, an insufficient understanding of which concept of art is being analyzed, and uncertainty as to the precise content of EP's methodological framework. In this paper, these and other issues are debated.
