Dispositional greed: scale development and validation

Author
Organization
Abstract
Greed is often invoked to explain non-cooperative behavior in a variety of situations. Despite this view of greed as a fundamental motive for actions, no empirical research has investigated the causes and consequences of greed. Relatedly, it is not clear why people differ in how greedy they are. The current studies aim to contribute to such research by developing a measure for dispositional greed. After 5 studies, the final dispositional greed scale consists of 9 items of which 3 are reversed. The reliability and validity tests confirm the quality of the scale, further suggesting greed to be a result of resource insecurity, both social and material.
