Chlamydia-isolaten van duiven: serovarbepaling en pathogenebetekenis voor kalkoenen

Abstract
The significance of chlamydiosis or ornithosis in pigeons was investigated by analysing material submitted by practitioners (autopsies and organ samples). Chlamydia psittaci was demonstrated directly in the samples. From eight samples the agent was isolated both in specific-pathogen-free (SPF) chicken eggs and in cell cultures. Chlamydia psittaci infections were found to occur in 10 % of the performed autopsies. In most cases, however, these bacteria were found in association with other agents. The most frequent clinical signs seen in cases of chlamydiosis were respiratory symptoms, conjunctivitis and poor racing performances. The agent was also demonstrated in 39 out of 47 conjunctival swabs of pigeons with conjunctivitis and inferior racing performances. Eight isolates obtained from these pigeons were serotyped using a panel of monoclonal antibodies. Three isolates were shown to belong to serovar A, which is considered to occur most frequently in psittaciforms. This finding may have important epizootiologic and zoonotic consequences, since Chlamydia psittaci strains from psittaciforms are considered more pathogenic for humans than strains from other avian orders. Five of the isolates belonged to the serovar B. One isolate of serovar B was used to experimentally infect specific pathogen free turkeys. It was shown that this pigeon isolate was moderately pathogenic for turkeys.
