Hydration of photoexcited 9-anthracene-carboxamide in dimethylsulfoxide

Abstract
The hydration of 9-anthracenecarboxamide in its lowest excited singlet state, in DMSO, has been evaluated fluorimetrically. Apparently Two water molecules are required to hydrate the fluorescent probe. Hydration and its attendant spectroscopic changes occur in a measurable equilibrium and are noticeable only after appreciable amounts of water have been added to the DMSO solution of the fluorophore.
