abstract
One hundred and thirty-siv horses were referred between January 1990 en May 1996 for treatment of distal limb lacerations involving extensor or flexor tendons. A follow up of 74 horses could be made. A difference was made between younger (less than or equal to 2 Sears) and older animals (> 2 years) at the moment of the tendon laceration. Twenty- fire (44 %) out of 57 horses with extensor lacerations returned to their original level of performance. Twelve horses (21 %) had a decrease of this level, 10 animals (18 %) showed pasture soundness or were used for breeding and 10 horses (18 %) were euthanised. A lower "complete recovery" percentage (19 %) was observed in the younger animals with extensor lacerations (n = 21) as compared to the older horses (n = 36). Eight horses (47 %) out of 17 animals with flexsor tendon lacerations performed as before, 3 animals (18 %) showed a decrease in performance and 6 horses (35 %) were euthanised. The "complete recovery" percentage of the younger amimals with flexor lacerations (n = 4) was also lon.er compared to those of the older horses (n = 13). The different treatments and complications of tendon lacerations in the horse are discussed.
