Elastic lateral-torsional buckling of cellular beams

Abstract
The use of beams with large circular web openings along the length of the beam has increased steadily during the last decades. However, not all aspects of the design of these cellular beams, such as lateral-torsional buckling (LTB), have been studied extensively. Currently, two design rules exist for calculating the elastic critical LTB buckling moment of these beams. Previous research by the authors, for a limited number of geometries, has shown that the first rule is overly conservative, while the second rule is fairly accurate, but can sometimes be unsafe. In this work, this last rule is examined more deeply by comparing the results with numerical simulations for a wide variety of realistic cellular beam geometries. It will be shown that the second rule is indeed slightly unsafe for some geometries. In reality however, these geometries will fail by plastic yielding rather than elastic instability, greatly reducing the importance of the unsafe deviations of this design rule.
