Replication Data for: The genesis of Dat-Gen with verbs of lacking in Old Frisian and Middle Low German

Abstract
This dataset contains replication data for the study "The genesis of Dat-Gen with verbs of lacking in Old Frisian and Middle Low German" (see Related Publication). The study investigates the origin of the genitive case in the Dat-Gen argument structure with verbs and predicates meaning "to lack" in Old Frisian and Middle Low German. The data for the study were collected from online corpora (see Methodological Information in the readme) and from the printed editions of the Old Frisian legal manuscripts, and they include all instances of verbs and predicates of lacking in the selected corpora, also with argument structures other than Dat-Gen. The dataset contains two data files. The first (1_DatGen_Lack_Old_Frisian_dataset.txt) holds the Old Frisian data with information about the argument structure and source text; the second (2_DatGen_Lack_Middle_Low_German_dataset.txt) holds the same type of information, but for Middle Low German.
Abstract of the related publication: A peculiarity of Old Frisian is the Dative-Genitive (Dat-Gen) case frame found with verbs of lacking, also documented in Middle Low German, involving verbs derived from roots meaning ‘break’ or ‘burst’. A closer inspection reveals that verbs of lacking predominantly select the Dat-Gen case frame in earlier East and West-Germanic. We review four explanations for the origin of the genitive, i.e. that its source is: i) attributive genitive, ii) partitive genitive, iii) genitive of negation, and, iv) the low-transitive nature of denominative verbs. We expand our study to Dat-Gen verbs in general in Germanic, including different semantic classes of verbs. Most of the relevant verbs are denominative and low in transitivity, with the genitive referent being minimally affected and negligibly involved in the event denoted by the verb.
