An improved device for instrumental insemination of queen honey bees

Abstract
Controlled mating by instrumental insemination is particularly relevant today, given the general trend toward rebuilding resilience in honey bee populations. The instruments currently in use are largely the same as those used in the late 1960s. Here we present a new insemination device with high torsional stability, ensuring a highly balanced operation. The two ending parts of the insemination syringe are made of brass to assure a better adhesion to the stainless-steel body. The queen holder is mounted on a platform that can move in 2 dimensions. In addition, the angle of inclination of the queen holder can be changed by a rotational movement perpendicular to this X-Y plane. The syringe holder is equipped with a ruler and a vernier that allows you to accurately measure the back and forward movement. Navigation of the capillary tip along the valve fold during insemination can be done easily and accurately by a long rod that rotates the syringe holder. The latter allows also the syringe to turn away from the queen holder, once the insemination is done. The proposed adaptations should improve the performance of instrumental insemination.
