Abstract
Co-design in living labs involves active participation from stakeholders, ensuring innovations meet their needs and fostering human-centric solutions. This study explores the implementation of a clinical living lab at (name of the) hospital in Belgium, in collaboration with (name of the) University and the (name of the) innovation hub. The lab focused on three cases involving elderly patients, logistics personnel, and patients with special needs. Industrial design engineering students facilitated co-design process, codesigned solutions with people with lived experience, and implemented them within the hospital. A total of 13 participants (students, healthcare workers, innovation employee) from the living lab were interviewed. All participants had previously engaged in at least one co-design session, which included doctors and patients alongside other stakeholders. The interviews explored participants' experiences with co-design, barriers, lessons learned, and enablers. Co-design practices were found to be timeconsuming, with challenges related to language and time management. This indicated the need for effective communication, early involvement, and education on co-design. Despite these challenges, the process was educational and inspirational, fostering mutual learning. The study highlights the complexities of implementing co-design in a clinical setting and emphasizes adaptable, human-centred innovation strategies. Key factors for success include effective communication, early involvement, education, and creating an engaging environment
