Legal tech and data protection

Abstract
The connection between legal tech and data protection comes in various forms. For example, legal tech applications can help businesses to comply with data protection legislation. Legal tech claims management companies can help consumers to enforce damage claims against businesses that have breached the law, and indeed we see the first initiatives to that effect in Germany. Finally, legal tech companies themselves heavily rely on data, some of which may be protected (as personal data) by the law, and may therefore be at risk of breaching data protection laws themselves. It is this variety of scenarios that this chapter unfolds, focusing mainly on issues that affect consumers directly or indirectly. A recurring theme thereby is the question whether legal tech companies are allowed to perform the services they offer, or whether they act in breach of the laws regulating the legal profession. These laws have not been harmonised in any way by European Union (EU) law. Related problems are shown, using the example of Germany.
