Abstract
This dataset was used for book chapter Saviano, Gina. 2024. L’espressione di non-realizzazione in italiano: il ruolo delle perifrasi imminenziali. In L. Lala & E. Castro, Il verbo in italiano: Morfologia, sintassi, semantica, testualità. Franco Cesati Editore. 125-142. The dataset contains 1,280 annotated instances of prospective (phasal) periphrases expressing non-realization in Italian, drawn from naturally occurring text. Each instance documents a periphrastic construction in which an event that was imminent or about to occur ultimately did not take place. The dataset covers seven periphrasis types: stare per + V, stare quasi per + V, stare lì lì per + V, stare lì per + V, accingersi a + V, essere in procinto di + V, and essere sul punto di + V, built around three phasal verbs (stare, essere, accingersi). Each instance is annotated for 19 variables, including: the periphrasis type, the phasal verb and its morphological properties (mood, tense, aspect), the animacy of the subject, the presence and type of contextual markers signaling non-realization, the syntactic context, and the Aktionsart (lexical aspect) of the embedded verb — specifically its dynamicity, duration, and telicity. The pragmatic function of each instance is classified as frustrated initiation, frustrated completion, or avertive. The examples are presented with their surrounding textual context (left and right context) to allow for qualitative and discourse-level analysis.
