- Abstract
- The paper explores the incorporation of Indigenous cultural elements into the classification and representation of African musical instruments, specifically those from traditional music traditions in Dagbon, a state in the Sudanic Savannah Belt region of Northern Ghana. The functional classification model draws on ethnographic and audiovisual research conducted in Dagbon from 1999 to 2010. I connect this to the research paradigm of embodied music interaction and expressive timing in African music and dance, focusing on the Sahelian Factor in Dagbon music and dance culture. Rather than relying on the prominent Eric von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs classification model to classify (Western) musical instruments within museums and universities, my model begins with a more pragmatic, simplified, indigenous model well-rooted in its African cultural context. I include and integrate elements of the von Hornbostel and Sachs, that is, vHS, classification model to demonstrate its systematic structure while highlighting anomalies in its classification of African musical instruments. I emphasise the use of organic materials and the materiality factor in constructing musical instruments, which are key components in the traditional idioms of music-making in the Northern Region.
