Fostering gender-sensitive interpreting : bridging social inclusion and pedagogy

- Ensuring equitable language access in gender-sensitive settings—such as psycho-medical environments and consultations in gender clinics—requires interpreters to navigate cross-linguistic and interactional challenges related to gender-fair communication. However, many interpreters report not always feeling sufficiently prepared to accurately interpret gender-sensitive consultations, despite the growing importance of this competence in professional practice. This is often due to a lack of formal training and standardized (cross-)linguistic strategies. This study examines firstly how both professional interpreters and interpreting students engage with gender-fair language, shedding light on their challenges, strategies, and perceptions of their role in fostering equitable and transparent communication. Interviews with professional interpreters reveal their difficulties in maintaining both linguistic accuracy and fluency when confronted with gender-neutral references, particularly in languages with rigid grammatical gender structures. The findings indicate a demand for concrete tools and guidance to ensure respectful and inclusive communication. In response to these concerns, secondly, this study developed and empirically tested a blended-learning training module on gender-fair interpreting for master's-level interpreting students. Using a pre-test/post-test design, the study assessed the module’s effectiveness in enhancing students’ competence in gender-sensitive interpreting. Additionally, retrospective interviews with the students provide insights into how the training impacted their awareness, confidence, and professional development in using gender-fair language. Reflecting on their experiences, the students discuss the extent to which targeted training strengthens their sensitivity to gender-fair intercultural communication. By addressing the need for structured guidance in gender-sensitive interpreting, this study underscores the importance of supplementing interpreter professionalisation to better equip both current and future professionals for the evolving demands of the field. Raising awareness of gender diversity and gender-fair linguistic strategies empowers interpreters to promote equitable multilingual communication in gender-sensitive settings.
