Abstract
Following Hollywood’s prolific production of sequels, remakes and other forms of imitative filmmaking, major European film industries (e.g. France and the UK) have significantly increased production of recycled content since the early 2000s. How this practice of recycling manifests itself in small European film industries – such as those of Belgium and Denmark – however, remains largely unexplored. As these industries are characterised by small domestic markets and heavy dependence on governmental support, imitative filmmaking has become a crucial part of their production cycles, as it carries fewer financial risks than original productions due to their implied built-in audiences. However, while popular European cinema tends to adopt Hollywood strategies, Hollywood’s current obsession with reviving 1980s intellectual properties (IPs) does not translate fully to those industries. While Belgian and Danish cinema both have revived local 1980s nostalgic IPs – such as Belgian requel De Collega’s 2.0 (2018) to popular 1980s television series De Collega’s (1978-1981) and the 2019 Danish live-action remake of the 1986 animation film Valhalla – this remains the exception, since most of their recycled content is based on relatively recent source texts. This prompts inquiries into the ubiquity of 1980s nostalgia, implying a potential tendency to overlook its nuances and its apparent lack of universality across contexts. This paper will adopt a quantitative database-centred approach and employ a descriptive statistical analysis to map out the evolution of imitative filmmaking in both Denmark and Belgium over a period of 23 years (2000 to 2023). Identifying their most common forms of recycling (e.g. sequels, readaptations, remakes), their genres, box office revenues, and what period their source texts originate from. The aim is to identify possible patterns across small European film industries and investigate whether and how they differ or mimic the nostalgia-related practices commonly associated with Hollywood and large European competitors.
