The reservoir effect : the role of GenAI based conversational agents in participatory futures

- Participatory futures (PFs) methodologies are increasingly recognized for their potential to address complex societal challenges by fostering inclusive and collaborative envisioning of the future. This paper explores the role of digital technologies, specifically conversational agents (CAs) powered by generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), in enhancing these methodologies. Using the interactive art installation RUMOR//Unfolding Futures as a case study, we examine how CAscan act as facilitators and contributors to PFs processes. Drawing on an open-ended survey (n=46) and interviews with the installation’s artists (n=6), the study highlights both the benefits and challenges of integrating CAs into co-creative dynamics. Our findings reveal that while these technologies can enhance engagement and inclusivity, their implementation requires careful attention to ethical considerations and methodological refinements to balance individual input with collective visions. The study raises critical questions about the value of these technologies in enhancing PFs, highlighting their potential to improve accessibility and inclusivity while emphasizing the importance of ethical oversight and continual innovation.
