Abstract
In this paper the challenges and milestone to be tackled toward a complete regulatory system for general anesthesia is presented. The proposed benchmark aim to include not only the three main components of anesthesia: hypnosis, neuromuscular blockade and analgesia but also to introduce the interaction with the hemodynamic variables: cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. From the perspective of anesthesia components the hypnosis and the neuromuscular blockade are well characterized while the analgesia (lack of pain) is still a gap in term of modeling and control. Recently, strenuous efforts have been made by the research group UGent-DYSC to obtain a customized sensor to measure the pain level and allow identifying a mathematical model of the signalling pathways of nociceptor excitation. This is the ANSPEC-PRO monitor, non-invasively measuring pain via skin impedance - the prototype device has been validated it on a small cohort, as well as in a randomized trial in 13 awake post-operatory. The prime result indicates a good correlation between ANSPEC-PRO and reported.
