- Abstract
- A common feature of governmental structures across the globe is the existence of a number of elected institutions and bodies to operate at different spatial levels within nation states which create a series of local, regional and national interactions between these institutions. The range of national settings within which these interactions take place and the varying levels of constitutional and legal freedoms and autonomy that exist below the level of the nation state, produce a competitive dynamic of intra-state government relationships that are theme of this book. The chapter sets out the main themes that the book will explore and why the countries examined were selected. It also explains the use of term, throughout this book, of intra state government in place of the more common sub-national governance and why such a term provides a wider explanation of the different offices, powers, functions, tasks, institutional structures, arrangements and relationships that form a complex set of governing processes of closer proximity to the public than national governments.
