- Abstract
- The integration of natural sciences into archaeology has significantly transformed our understanding of past human societies by fostering a holistic approach that situates humans as integral components of broader ecological systems. This interdisciplinary synergy has enabled archaeologists to reconstruct human-environment interactions, landscape use, and subsistence practices with unprecedented accuracy. Advances in analytical methods – such as stable isotope analysis, ancient DNA, and radiometric dating – have enriched our ability to address questions related to migration, diet, health, and social organization. This paper explores the historical evolution and current role of natural sciences in archaeological research in Flanders, and evaluates how new methodologies and laboratory protocols have broadened the scope of archaeological research. We address the critical need for tailored education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustained investment in expertise to fully harness the potential of emerging technologies and analytical techniques. While cutting-edge methods offer new opportunities, the importance of foundational analyses of organic and cultural materials remains paramount. Ensuring the continuity of specialized knowledge and the creation of digital infrastructures for sharing and synthesizing data are essential for advancing the field. By aligning methodological and technological advancements with archaeological questions, the collaboration between natural sciences and archaeology will continue to uncover richer and more nuanced narratives of past human behaviors, societal dynamics, and their interactions with changing landscapes.
