Abstract
Effective communication of pain in healthcare settings is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. This study examines how pain is expressed in English and Chinese, identifying both linguistic and cultural challenges. While English pain expressions include descriptions like "sharp pain" or "headache," Chinese expressions are influenced by concepts from Traditional Chinese Medicine, such as 气痛 [qì tòng] ("qi pain"). Western tools like the McGill Pain Questionnaire, although comprehensive, often miss the nuances present in other cultural contexts. The research utilizes a combination of corpus analysis and participant-driven data collection to explore how these expressions vary between native speakers and second-language learners. By analyzing linguistic patterns and conducting real-life healthcare scenario observations, the study aims to refine pain assessment tools to better accommodate cultural differences. This approach will enhance understanding among healthcare providers, improving patient care and cross-cultural communication in clinical settings.
