- Abstract
- Satire and satirists have been the subject of legal attention for millennia. Between the classical period and today, much of that legal scrutiny has focused on how best to regulate satire either touching on affairs of state or on the reputations of private individuals. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, satire has also faced new legal challenges, including prosecutions and litigation related to intellectual property, defamation, and hate speech.
