Abstract
Usage-based Construction Grammar tends to define constructions as clearly delineated entities with fixed formal and functional properties. This approach is problematic with respect to syntactic gradience, which involves difficult-to-classify constructs and hence fluid boundaries between constructions. A case in point are [IRR w-]-type free-choice expressions in present-day German such as egal wer ‘no matter who’ or wurscht was ‘no matter (lit.: sausage) what’, which triple as concessive-conditional subordinators, free-choice indefinite pronouns and socalled “disintegrated wideners”, a type of quantificational expression that is intermediate between the two former construction types. Based on a qualitative analysis of 1,200 tokens from the German Reference Corpus DeReKo, the present article has two aims: (i) to document hitherto underdescribed constructions along the cline between [IRR w-] subordinators and indefinites and (ii) to develop a model of constructional gradience able to accommodate the empirical findings. The data are accounted for by extending Aarts’ (2007) concept of intersective gradience in a constructionist spirit, treating intermediate constructs as potentially emergent constructions.
