New insights on early medieval settlement from 'The Loop' (Belgium)

Abstract
Few early medieval rural settlements in Flanders (northern Belgium) have seen extensive excavation or feature established chronological frameworks. This seriously hampers analysis of building traditions, farmyard layout, and settlement systems. Large-scale archaeological operations on ‘The Loop’, in the village of Sint-Denijs-Westrem (near Ghent, province of East-Flanders), however brought to light a near-complete early medieval rural settlement that was continuously occupied between c. AD 600-850. It consisted of ten farmyards distributed over six chronological phases. The large-scale nature of the archaeological project, the long-term occupation of the settlement, and the refined chronological framework based on the dendrochronological study of sixteen timber lined water wells allows to study several aspects of the rural settlement in great chronological and spatial detail and from a diachronic perspective. Beyond the more descriptive aspects of farmyard layout and settlement system, this also includes discussions on the changing nature of the settlement in socio-economic terms and the social networks in which the local community on The Loop participated in. This research offers a comparative framework to study less-extensively excavated rural settlements in the wider region and at the same time adds to the international debates on early medieval rural settlement.
De meeste archeologisch onderzochte vroegmiddeleeuwse rurale nederzettingen in Vlaanderen (noordelijk België) zijn slechts gedeeltelijk onderzocht en hun chronologie is vaak onduidelijk. Deze situatie belemmert de analyse van bouwtradities, erforganisatie en nederzettingssystemen. Grootschalige opgravingen op ‘The Loop’ in Sint-Denijs-Westrem (bij Gent, provincie Oost-Vlaanderen) brachten echter een vroegmiddeleeuwse landelijke nederzetting bijna volledig aan het licht. Ze was continu bewoond was tussen ca. 600-850 n. Chr. en bestond uit tien erven verdeeld over zes chronologische fasen. Het grootschalige karakter van de opgravingen, de langdurige bewoning van de nederzetting en het verfijnde chronologische kader, dat gebaseerd is dendrochronologisch onderzoek van zestien houten waterputten, laten toe om verschillende aspecten van de rurale bewoning te bestuderen in groot chronologisch en ruimtelijk detail en vanuit een diachronisch perspectief. Naast de meer beschrijvende analyses over erforganisatie en het nederzettingssysteem, omvat dit ook discussies van de veranderende aard van de nederzetting in socio-economisch perspectief, en van de sociale netwerken waar de lokale gemeenschap op The Loop deel van uitmaakte. Dit onderzoek biedt zo een vergelijkend kader om minder uitgebreid opgegraven landelijke nederzettingen in de bredere regio te bestuderen en draagt tegelijkertijd bij aan internationale debatten over de vroegmiddeleeuwse landelijke bewoning.
