Abstract
In this paper I use the history of insubordinate wishes in Post-Classical Greek (III BCE – VI CE) to gain more insights into the underexplored connections between morphosyntactic stability and change, on the one hand, and register and context of use, on the other hand. First, I provide an overview of which forms of insubordinate wish constructions were used in which periods and detail which different diachronic processess change the form and meaning of these constructions. Next, I identify the different motivations for speakers to use innovative insubordinate patterns or to ‘recontinue’ insubordinate patterns from earlier periods (especially when they were not used elsewhere synchronically anymore). Finally, I conclude that the findings of this study urge us to move away from teleological narratives of Post-Classical Greek morphosyntax as the linear developmental stage towards Modern Greek.
