Abstract
Zn is an essential trace mineral for pigs, and since the ban on the use of pharmacological ZnO for weaners, interest has increased in novel sources of Zn that may have proper􀆟es superior to those of conventional ZnO or ZnSO4 used for nutritional purposes. A novel ZnO source, based on a synergy between Mg and Zn, was supplemented at 120 mg Zn per kg to a pre-starter (d0-14 post-weaning) and starter diet (d14-42), and compared to ZnSO4 at a similar supplementary level of Zn (control). Treatments were replicated in 10 pens, each with 6 piglets weaned at 26-28 days of age. On d14, one piglet from each pen was sampled to assess physiological endpoints. The novel ZnO source had no effect on diarrhoea incidence or performance during the pre-starter period, but it resulted in a lower feed-to-gain ratio than that of the control (1.38 vs. 1.43, respectively; P < 0.05) without any effect on growth performance during the starter period. For the total period, the feed-to-gain ra􀆟o was again lower (1.35 vs. 1.39, respectively; -2.9 %; P < 0.05). The number of Lactobacilli (+0.6 log10 CFU/g) tended to be higher in contents of the distal small intestine when feeding the novel ZnO source (P=0.076), whereas pH and other bacterial groups did not differ in other segments of the foregut. Interestingly, the activity of alkaline phosphatase, a Zn- and Mg-dependent enzyme, in the distal small intestine was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (1.87 vs. 1.18 U/g, respectively; P < 0.05), which may play a protective role and attenuate inflammation in the gut. In conclusion, feeding the novel ZnO source supported performance of weaned piglets during the starter period, which may be mediated by its effect on intestinal alkaline phosphatase activity.
