Abstract
Equine grass sickness (EGS), grass disease or equine dysautonomia is an acquired degenerative polyneuropathy that occurs in exclusively grazing equine species, but whose etiology is not fully understood yet. Grass disease results from neuronal degeneration of the autonomic, somatic and enteric nervous systems and gives rise to acute, severe colic often resulting in mortality. Only chronic cases have a small chance of clinical recovery. The high mortality of this condition underscores the need for further research related to the etiology, pathogenesis, ante-mortem diagnosis, treatment and especially prevention of this fatal disease. In this article, an update of the state of grass disease anno 2024 is provided.
