- Abstract
- This chapter investigates the impact digital media have had and continue to have on the power balance and existing hierarchies between groups within the Jain tradition. After an introduction on the ways religious hierarchies can be confirmed or overhauled online, it discusses the complex relationship Jain monastic lineages have with digital media in the context of injunctions against the use of technology and personal property and looks into the ways some monks and monastic lineages have worked around these injunctions. Examining the potential benefits to be gained by those individuals and groups that decide to develop a digital presence, this chapter probes the impact of the increased personal accessibility of some Jain ascetics to their lay constituents, as well as the round-the-clock online availability of lectures and teachings on the traditional relationships that govern the fourfold Jain community.
