- Abstract
- The root vasculature consists of a complex assembly of cell types which undergo a striking transformation while completing their developmental trajectory from proliferation to differentiation. These changes require a tight regulatory network of transcription factors, enzymes, signaling peptides and plant hormones which mediate morphological adaptations ensuring a normal vascular development and functionality. As vascular tissues are formed throughout the entire plant life but acquire differing three-dimensional arrangements within the root, a detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms controlling the formation of vascular tissues during embryogenesis, primary and secondary growth is crucial to comprehend vascular development. Although this field of research advances rapidly, the formation of some cell types and several other aspects of vascular development remain poorly understood. With special attention to recent findings, the following chapter aims to provide an overview of the development and the molecular control underlying the formation of the different vascular cell types.
