Abstract
In the field of sustainability transitions (STs) both 'learning' (van Mierlo et al., 2020) and ‘place-specificity’ (Köhler et al., 2019) have been identified as important factors in the shaping of transitions. It has been argued that these findings need refining to open up the black box of "that, what and how people are learning in practices striving for STs" (Van Poeck, Östman & Block, 2020) and “how place-specificity matters for transitions” (Hansen & Coenen, 2015). To find out how people are learning at the micro-level, methodologies based upon Dewey (1934)'s transactional pragmatist philosophy (Van Poeck & Östman, 2022) have been elaborated. These transactional approaches enable the in action study of how people create meaning and learn in concrete sustainability practices (Plummer & Van Poeck, 2021; Van Poeck & Östman, 2021). To go beyond a static conception of place, geographers have proposed to work with theories of 'place-making' (Murphy, 2015; Håkansson, 2018; Lai, 2023). Herein places are thought to be continually and relationally reproduced through 'place-frames', which are partial and shared meanings of what a place is, ought to or can be (ibid.). In my research, I will use transactional methods such as ‘Practical Epistemology Analysis’ (PEA, cf. Wickman & Östman, 2002) to study instances of how place-framing is being done in action. PEA is a linguistical method which allows us to track how meaning gets made in action. It will be interesting to find moments where place-frames get disturbed and how collective learning may lead to their reconstruction in actual practices. Currently, I have created a dataset of in situ recordings (audio or video) of three cases, which were selected with the idea of maximum variation in mind: a government-led mobility transition in a small town, a community-led energy transition in a city neighbourhood and a transnational de-mining movement.
