- Abstract
- Scholars worldwide put a lot of effort in grasping the news use and attitudes of youth, as research shows that news socialization during this life stage is essential. Understanding how young people develop their news habits is even more important in today’s high-choice-media environment, where youngsters have more autonomy in deciding which media to consume, and which not to (Edgerly, 2017). Against this background, research reveals a concerning trend. Picone et al. (2023) found that the proportion of Flemish youth who are disinterested in news augmented from 7% to 23% between 2020 and 2023. It is rather unclear how this disinterest relates to other news attitudes or behavior, such as news avoidance. This study therefore aims to improve our understanding of news disinterest via an online survey of a sample of +1500 secondary school pupils. Preliminary reveals already reveal that 1 in 4 adolescents express not being interested in news. In addition to identifying the prevalence of (dis)interest in the news, we will also examine the profiles, news use patterns and attitudes of these disinterested youngsters. Understanding this growing phenomenon is imperative in today’s landscape, where news media struggle to strengthen youngsters’ attention for trustworthy information.
