Abstract
Introduction : The study of the seasonal modulation of reproductive aspects in chelonians is of utmost importance for a thorough understanding of the reproductive physiology of different species, as well as the conserved responses within the Testudines order. Our objective was to identify variations of testicular morphometry in two chelonian species, Trachemys scripta (TS) and Testudo hermanni (TH), during the? reproductive (RS) versus non-reproductive season (NRS). Material and methods : Testes were obtained after endoscopic assisted orchiectomy. After measuring the length, width, and weight of the testicles, they were immediately fixed in 4% formalin. Based on histological features and date of collection, the animals were categorized as in reproductive or non-reproductive season. Results : All results were normalized by animal weight and are indicated as mean ± SEM. There was clear influence of seasonality (P<0.05) on the testicular morphometry of the TS group (averaged testicular length: 2.12 ± 0.3 vs 2.94 ± 0.16 cm/Kg; width: 1.46 ± 0.07 vs 1.95 ± 0.13 cm/Kg and paired weight:3.17 ± 0.5 vs 5.9 ± 0.6 g/Kg for TS during the NRS [n=6] and RS [n=8], respectively). Similar results were observed for the TH group (averaged testicular length: 1.21 ± 0.1 vs 1.6 ± 0.15 cm/Kg; width: 1.01 ± 0.09 vs 1.36 ± 0.13 cm/Kg and paired weight:0.46 ± 0.1 vs 1.55 ± 0.150.5 g/Kg for TS during the NRS [n=4] and RS [n=5], respectively). Conclusions : The findings of the present study indicate fundamental changes in testicular morphometry in chelonians based on seasonality, establishing a base for comparison within and between species.
