- Abstract
- The central aim of this doctoral dissertation was to explore and to provide insights into the value of a reactive static air support surface to prevent pressure ulcers in high-risk nursing home residents. This central aim can be divided into four open and multidimensional objectives: 1. To identify, assess and summarize available evidence on the effectiveness of static air mattress overlays to prevent pressure ulcers. The primary outcome was the incidence of pressure ulcers. Secondary outcomes included costs and patient comfort. 2. To investigate the incidence and risk factors for the development of pressure ulcers in patients placed on reactive static air support surfaces: mattress overlay, heel wedge and seat cushion. 3. To compare the effectiveness and cost of static air support surfaces versus alternating air pressure support surfaces in a nursing home population at high risk for pressure ulcers. 4. To explore the true meaning of elderly nursing home residents’ perspectives and critical success factors when implementing a new non-powered reactive static air mattress overlay to prevent pressure ulcers.
