Abstract
Doctoral dissertation. The enigmatic nature of the female Oedipus complex continues to confound researchers unlike its more clear-cut and comprehensible male counterpart. Freud’s statement that what a woman is, is a sheer unsolvable problem, already underscores its complex nature. While substantial theoretical discord persists, many scholars agree that the mother-daughter relationship profoundly shapes the female complex and is thus central to our understanding of it. But what happens in this relationship, and how it shapes the girl’s oedipal situation, remains equally debated. What is clear, however, is that the bond between mother and daughter often oscillates between profoundly positive and deeply negative, seldom straying into neutral territory. Combined with the many conflicting theories on the matter, this suggests that much remains to be explored regarding the female Oedipal complex and that the final word on the subject has yet to be spoken. In this dissertation a multi-faceted approach is adopted, combining mythological, historical, and Lacanian perspectives to contribute to the understanding of the female Oedipus complex.
