- A novel membrane fractionation protocol by the use of ultra- and nanofiltration was developed in this work to identify disinfection by-product precursors from the complex pool of natural organic matter. An intensive sampling campaign has been started for one year at a water treatment plant in Belgium to monitor the reactivity of the different fractions on a seasonal basis. Currently, two sampling campaigns have already been performed where the surface reservoir water has been fractionated successfully into biopolymer (BP), humic substances (HS) and low molecular weight (LMW) fractions and subsequently chlorinated and chloraminated. All the fractions had lower reactivity towards chloramine compared to chlorine and even less nitrogenous disinfection by-products are formed after chloramination for all nitrogenous families tested. Furthermore, the reactivity of the BP and HS fraction appeared to be very similar during chlorine disinfection which implies that other characteristics apart from size and hydrophobicity might be important to predict disinfection by-product formation. Therefore, continuation of this sampling campaign and fractionation on a monthly basis will be executed together with thorough characterization of the organic matter fractions with fluorescence and mass spectrometry to elucidate the key characteristics of different disinfection by-product precursors.
