Abstract
The thesis is divided into three parts: the first one introduces the context studied; the second part illustrates the different methodologies used; the third and final part shows the results and their discussion. The first chapter aims to introduce the geographical, geomorphological and historical context and provide a background on archaeological research in the area. The second chapter is dedicated to the description of the current vegetation and the peculiarities of the area and its transformations in the past. Finally, an outline of the archaeobotanical studies of the medieval period in the Romagna area is presented. Chapter 3 addresses the concept of landscape and its cultural, ecological, historical and archaeological declinations, focusing specifically on the tradition of Italian landscape studies. In Part II, the methodology is presented in detail, with the fourth chapter describing the type of written sources analysed and the structure of the Access database. The fifth chapter deals with the collection, preparation and identification of the archaeobotanical samples studied. The results of the study of the written sources are illustrated in Chapter 6, in which an attempt is made to give shape to a described landscape through the recording of landmarks both “natural”, such as woodlands, rivers, cultivated fields and their products, and anthropogenic, such as fortified sites, centres of territorial administration (curtes) and clusters of land properties (massae). Chapter 7 focuses on the results of the archaeobotanical study carried out at the castrum of Zagonara site: after a brief historical contextualization and description of the stratigraphy, the results are presented and divided into carpological, anthropological and pollen data. Follow the interpretation and discussion of the data. Chapter 8 is dedicated to the results of the archaeobotanical study on the four off-site contexts selected, with the aim of better understanding the formation and evolution of the marshland areas which characterized the landscape in the past. After the illustration of each case study, all the data are combined in a complete and final discussion.
