Education in a functionally differentiated world society

Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of systems-theoretical reflections on education in modern society. It focuses particularly on education as a function system in our world society. Building upon the theories of Talcott Parsons and Niklas Luhmann, three aspects of the sociohistorical evolution of this function system are discussed: the worldwide institutionalization of inclusion imperatives, the limits to professionalization processes, and the triggers of the rapid global expansion of higher education. In light of recent evolutions, also discussed is how the rapid expansion of participation in higher education in recent decades is changing the position and relevance of education in contemporary society. Attention is drawn to the forms of socio-geographical segregation and exclusion that are currently emerged between high- and low-schooled individuals in many parts of the world.
