- Abstract
- Circular building is put forward as a key strategy to reduce the environmental impact of the building sector. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is identified as an important tool to prove the potential of circular building. LCA can be used to determine whether circular building does in fact have a lower environmental impact than our traditional linear way of building. When comparing the environmental impact of circular and linear building elements, a key question is in which situations a circular building element is environmentally beneficial. Is this dependent on the study period, the number of times materials are reused,…? Despite the importance of and the uncertainty on these parameter values, most existing LCA studies consider all parameter values fixed. However, to obtain robust conclusions on the environmental impact of circular versus linear building elements the most influential parameters should be considered variable. The objective of this paper is to determine the most influential parameters for the environmental impact of linear versus circular building elements. This is done for the case study of space dividing walls in offices. First, the influential parameters are determined through a sensitivity analysis. Next, a comparative LCA study of the space dividing walls is conducted with the use of variable influential parameters. Including variable influential parameters in LCA studies provides more objective insight into the possible environmental impact of circular and linear building elements and under which conditions (i.e., parameter values) one solution is better than the other.
