- Abstract
- This paper addresses a methodological challenge for research on sustainability transitions (STs) that are still ‘in the making’: how to connect observations in on-going practices to the potential emergence of profound societal transitions? It suggests and illustrates a research design that aims to bridge the gap between empirical observations here and now, and long-term, open-ended change processes. The approach combines empirical case studies with review of research literature reporting on ex post analyses that have empirically revealed how past STs took place and which mechanisms, a posteriori, proved to be crucial for this. With the help of Practical Epistemology Analysis and dramaturgical analysis, it is possible to investigate how earlier identified ST mechanisms precisely occur in contemporary observable practices – potential transitions in the making – through the actions of participants. This is illustrated with empirical examples of how ‘reframing problems’ and ‘projecting new futures’ take shape in public participation events regarding a transformation of mobility practices and infrastructure in a Belgian town.
