Abstract
In this article we study the conservation status of 42 plots in grasslands targeting habitat type 6510 (Lowland hay meadows – Alopecurus pratensis, Sanguisorba officinalis), half of which are located within and half outside the Natura2000 Special Protection Areas (SPA). Only one grassland within an SPA and no grassland outside an SPA meet the 11 criteria that together give a picture of their conservation status. Lowland hay meadows require little to moderately fertilized soils, which are hard to find in Flanders. Both the phosphorus concentrations in the soil and the nitrogen depositions are still too high in many of the researched grasslands. The number and cover of key species is also problematic in many grasslands. We believe that restoring of species-rich grassland inside and outside SPAs can be tackled more efficiently: customization is needed, with targeted measurement of soil nutrient status, careful reintroductions of key species and an adapted mowing management.
