Abstract
Over the past decade, Open Innovation (OI) literature has extended its scope beyond strictly economical contexts to the context of societal value creation. This has given rise to the notion of distributed knowledge as drivers for sustainable innovation development. In the past 15 years, the concept of Urban Living Labs has gained popularity to put the social open innovation paradigm into practice. Hence this project format is being embedded within city environments aimed to support transition processes that try to tackle wicked problems. However, today, a fuzzy understanding exists regarding the concept of ULLs, due to an unclear understanding on its value creation within ecosystem environments. Therefore, this paper aims to conceptualise and gain more understanding on how ULLs are instrumentalized and create value, according to the perspective of ecosystem stakeholders who participated in such a project. To gain these insights, this study starts from a single case study in which a multimethod qualitative research design was conducted. This research design consisted of 20 semi-structured key-informant interviews, 4 focus groups and a participatory observation. The results show that there is a clear value for the participating stakeholders which can be summarised in two main clusters:1) the ULL as a way to build and strengthen the capacities of participating stakeholders; and 2) the ULL as a way to facilitate meaningful interaction in urban transition processes.
